An Evening with Naseer Sami

The name of Naseeruddin Saami needs no introduction in the field of music. His forefathers were affiliated with the Darbar of Hazrat Nizamuddin Auliya and one of his ancesters was trained by Hazrat Ameer Khusro. Saami himself has been guided by 4 mentors the main one being his Ustad & uncle Munshi Raziuddin. Sampurna presented a unique performance. unique performance of his exquisite style of singing called 'Sudh Bani'

An Evening in Memory of Munshi Raziuddin

Sampurna organized a performance by "Fareed Ayaz and Abu Muhammad and Group" in memory of renowned Qawwal Munshi Raziuddin. Munshi Razi belonged to a family that had sung Qawwali for eight centuaries. He himself practiced the art for over sixty-five years and had also passed on the tradition to his sons and founded the "Fareed Ayaz Qawwal and Brothers" group. The group has toured many countries and performed traditional music and Qawwali in Urdu, Punjabi, Sindhi, Hindi, Persian, Arabic, Bangladesh and Purbi.

Live Shehnai Recital by Ustad Ali Nawaz

Sampurna organized a live Shehnai Concert by Ustad Ali Nawaz. Ustad Nawz hails from a village near Shikarpur, Sindh. He began to learn the Shehnai in 1947 when he was about 18 years old. Besides shehnai, he also acquired mastery over other instruments including Sindhi nafili, mutah, sundari and kathori shehnai. Today Ustad Ali Nawaz is considered one of the last Shehnai players alive in the country and perhaps the best. The Shehnai recital was followed by a video of classical dance featuring three forms: Oddisi, Kathak and Bharat Natam.

Jugalbandi with Mohan & Shujaat

Evening began with the screening of a jugalbandi video of Pandit Vishwa Mohann Bhatt (Mohan Veena) and Ustad Shujaat Ali Khan. Vishwa Mohan Bhatt is undoubtedly one of the most expressive, versatile and greatest slide players in the world. Shujaat Hussain Khan, son and ‘shagird' of the legendary sitar maestro Ustad Vilayat Khan, enthralled the audience with his intuitive, fresh and spontaneous performance. Followed by the video was a uniquely inspiring live vocal performance by Karam Abbas, son of late Ustad Ahmed Ali Khan of Gwalior gharana.

The immortal voice - K. L. Saigal

Sampurna organized a joint musical evening in association with Mauseqaar to mark the centenary celebration of the legendary singer Kundan Lal Saigal. Evening began with the screening of a film on the life and works of the immortal voice depicting the undying charm of Saigal's music. The unique video presentation was followed by solo performances by G.N. Murai and Captain Khurshid who sang Saigal's songs as a musical tribute to mark the birth of this timeless singer.

Sitar and Kathak Evening

Sampurna arranged a tribute to (late) Ustad Vilayat Khan, son of (late) Ustad Inayat Khan. The evening comprised of a video showing Ustad Vilayat live in 'jugalbandi', alongwith his brother Ustad Imrat Khan on sarbahar, his nephew Irshad Khan on sitar and his second nephew Wajahat on the Sarod. The ragas featured were 'Darbari', 'Suha Sugrai' and a thumri in 'Piloo'. The video session was followed by a kathak dance performance by Hasan Jan and a brilliant tabla performance by Raju Samrat.

Music Talent Hunt

Sampurna organized an all Karachi talent contest in March 2004. Youngsters between 6 and 26 years of age participated under vocal (geet, ghazal, classical/semi classical) and instrumental (stringed/percussion/wind instruments) categories. Click to read more.

Concert for Peace
January 2004
Sampurna started the new year with a classical music concert dedicated to "Peace and to the peace loving citizens of Pakistan and India". Saffia Beyg and Sajid Husain gave enthralling performances on vocals and sitar respectively.
